Los Angeles Rams: Khalil Tate can be the Rams’ Taysom Hill
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Rams may not seem like suitors to bring in a rookie quarterback with Jared Goff but could get creative and bring in Khalil Tate.
Although the quarterback position is not perfect, the Los Angeles Rams are not going to be looking for a new starting quarterback anytime soon. Jared Goff signed a massive extension with the team and while he certainly has his flaws, the Rams are going all-in on Goff.
Goff’s contract is so large that the Rams are simply not going to move him and cutting him will not be an option until late in his contract because of all the dead cap. Simply put, get used to Jared Goff.
It is not all bad, however. Goff has gotten a bad rep early in his career despite his numbers standing up with some recent all-time greats who started their careers in a similar fashion. Goff might not be perfect, but he is not terrible, either.
Even with Goff, the team is likely going to be making some sort of quarterback move. Blake Bortles is a free agent after one year with the team and his relationship with Goff and the team could lead the Rams to re-sign Bortles to another backup contract.
If it is not Bortles it could be a different veteran. Either way, the Rams would benefit from having an experienced backup behind Goff to help in the quarterback room.
That might not be the only quarterback move that the team makes, though, as there is an exciting opportunity that the team could take. Depending on whether or not he gets drafted, or if he is available in the seventh round, the Rams would benefit immensely from picking up quarterback Khalil Tate.
Now, I know what you are thinking. Why would the Rams waste a draft pick or bring in an undrafted rookie quarterback when they have Goff and potentially Bortles? The plan would be to take a page out of Sean Payton’s playbook and use Tate in a Taysom Hill-type role.
Tate is freakishly athletic. He has his flaws in throwing the football and reading opposing defenses as a pocket passer but he has the athleticism of a wide receiver. So much so that there are the same narratives that followed Lamar Jackson around that Tate might benefit from switching to receiver.
Tate has similar athleticism to Jackson. Granted, Jackson was a significantly better passer and orchestrator of the offense, but in terms of pure athleticism at the quarterback position, the two are similar.
This could be a great, cheap weapon that the Los Angeles Rams bring and get creative with after the departure of Todd Gurley. The team needs anything to help alleviate some of the pressure off of Goff’s shoulders and having a third-string quarterback that the team can use as a change-of-pace option would be incredible.
Sean McVay would use him in essentially the same way that the Saints use Hill and that is all over the field. Tate could take snaps directly in shotgun and run the ball or surprise the defense with a throw, or he could line up at tight end and even wideout and be a receiver and a rushing threat on jet sweeps.
He does not have the same physicality as Hill to be a blocker but he could even be an asset in the return game as well. Simply put: he would be an athlete that the Los Angeles Rams could utilize on the field that also can throw the football, forcing opposing defenses to respect him to avoid being burnt by a long pass.
That is what makes Hill so successful on the Saints and would make Tate so successful on the Los Angeles Rams.
If anyone could duplicate the Saints’ success with Taysom Hill it is Sean McVay, who is an offensive wizard.
