Chargers Rumors: Los Angeles could have fallback option at quarterback
By Nick Ziegler
Recent Chargers rumors are that they might have a fallback option at the quarterback position in the 2020 NFL Draft.
With the NFL Draft right around the corner, there has been no shortage of Chargers rumors about what the team will do with their first pick.
Coming into the draft, the Chargers are one of the teams that are expected to draft a quarterback. The decision to let Philip Rivers walk in free agency created a void at the position that will need to be filled.
As of now, Tyrod Taylor will be the starting quarterback for the Chargers. With a good amount of starts under his belt, Taylor can be a good stop-gap for the Chargers. However, it is hard to envision him becoming the next franchise quarterback.
While the Chargers are in the Top-10, this has become a tricky draft to navigate. With travel restrictions, scouting and meeting with prospects have been very hard. After Joe Burrow, the quarterback class has a lot of question marks.
Recently, Ian Rapoport reported that the Chargers could be looking at Jalen Hurts in the second round.
If this is the case, the Chargers would then certainly be fading Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert with the sixth pick. Tua would be a great option if his durability wasn’t such a big question, but it is hard to risk that with a Top-10 pick.
Herbert could be the second quarterback taken in the draft because of Tua’s injury concerns, but the Chargers would then have to jump the Miami Dolphins to do so. With Tua’s injuries being a concern, the Chargers could look to fill other needs with their sixth overall pick.
If the Chargers pass on Tua or Herbert at sixth overall, they will almost certainly either be moving into the later part of the first round or using their second-round pick on a quarterback. Jordan Love and Jalen Hurts appear to be the two quarterbacks that could be selected in this range.
For the Chargers, while they do a quarterback, they don’t have to force a pick in the Top-10. They can roll with Taylor for 2020, and even pursue some of the other options available in free agency or via a trade.
With the draft almost here, it will be interesting to see what the Chargers do with the sixth overall pick.
