Los Angeles Chargers pass on quarterback at six in recent mock draft
By Nick Ziegler
As we get set for the 2020 NFL Draft, Pro Football Focus recently released their final expert mock draft. Who did they have the Los Angeles Chargers draft?
With the NFL Draft almost here, the Los Angeles Chargers will be on the clock with the sixth overall pick in the draft.
This offseason saw a lot of change for the Chargers. They let both Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon walk in free agency. Rivers has been the face of the franchise for a while and has been the starting quarterback for a decade.
Coming into the draft, the Chargers have been one of the teams that have been heavily linked to many of the top quarterbacks. However, with the sixth overall pick, they might not be using that selection on a quarterback.
In the most recent PFF expert mock draft, they had the Chargers going in a different direction other than quarterback at sixth overall. In their mock draft, the Chargers go with Andrew Thomas from Georgia. You can read the entire mock draft with a subscription to PFF here.
In the mock draft, Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa both were off the board when the Chargers got on the clock. For the Chargers, they will have to have a plan in place if this happens, as it is fairly likely that it could.
PFF decided to instead of reach on a quarterback, to address a need on the offensive line. By selecting Andrew Thomas with the sixth overall pick, the Chargers would be giving themselves an offensive tackle who could be with the team for the next 10-15 years.
Thomas is a player that can both block in the running game and the passing game effectively, which would help the Chargers out. With the Chargers passing on a quarterback at six, they could bolster their team in other areas and still get a quarterback later on in the draft.
This decision by the Chargers would likely come down to how much they like Justin Herbert. He is a bit of a wild card in this draft, and he could end up being their guy. With the draft almost here, we won’t have to wait much longer to see what the Chargers do with the sixth pick.
If the Chargers do end up taking Thomas with the sixth pick like in the recent mock draft, it will be interesting to see what they do to get their quarterback later on.
