– Joshua Kelley

Since the Chargers traded away their 2nd and 3rd round picks, they weren’t on the clock until the 4th round again. With their fourth round pick, the Chargers elected to go running back and take Joshua Kelley from UCLA.

This was one of the more surprising picks in the draft for the Chargers, as Kelley wasn’t graded out as a great prospect by either ESPN or PFF. While Kelley might have been a bit of a surprise pick, there are some things to like about his game.

In college, Kelley was a very physical downhill runner, which could be good for the Chargers on 3rd and short attempts. However, while he isn’t afraid of contact, he doesn’t really make anyone miss either.

With Melvin Gordon off to Denver, the Chargers taking a running back shouldn’t have been too much of a surprise. However, Kelley isn’t the type of player who is going to have a big impact on the team more than likely. Furthermore, he almost certainly wont be a replacement for Gordon.

The strong combine for Kelley helped him raise his stock and get drafted. However, his on the field performance wasn’t that spectacular in college.

Grade: C-
