Los Angeles Chargers: 3 Players they should have drafted over Justin Herbert
By Nick Ziegler
– Isaiah Simmons
One of the more interesting players in the draft this season was Isaiah Simmons from Clemson. Simmons was ranked as one of the top defensive prospects in the draft and ultimately went 8th overall to the Arizona Cardinals.
The linebacker position wasn’t considered a top need for the Chargers, but it was one, as they traded back into the first round to draft Kenneth Murray. If linebacker was a need for the Chargers than they really should have considered Simmons with the sixth pick.
Simmons is going to have the ability to play all over the field on the defensive side of the ball, and he appears to be the linebacker of the future. Being able to cover the pass from the linebacker position in the NFL is very important. While Murray might be great against the run for the Chargers, he might not be a good defender against the pass.
Simmons has the potential to play both safety and linebacker in the NFL with his size and speed. Adding a player like that would have given a young and talented Chargers defense even more flexibility. Defense didn’t appear to be a big need for the Chargers heading into the draft, but Simmons would have been a great value pick.
