In a recent interview, former Los Angeles Lakers great Pau Gasol said that he believes the Lakers should be the favorites to win it all.

The 2019-20 season was off to a great start for the Los Angeles Lakers. After years of struggles, the Lakers finally were back to being one of the best teams in the NBA.

With the best record in the Western Conference, the Lakers were solidifying themselves as the team to beat. Before the suspension of the NBA season, the Lakers were able to beat the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Clippers over the course of a weekend.

The wins against arguably the other top two teams in the league provided the Lakers will some credibility as a top team. Before those wins, the Lakers were winless in three games against the Bucks and the Clippers combined.

With the NBA Championship being the goal for the Lakers, they will still have their work cut out for them if the season does resume. Recently, Pau Gasol talked on Danny’s Green podcast about whether or not he thought the Lakers were the team to beat. Here’s what Gasol had to say with text via SilverScreenandRoll.

"“I like the Lakers. I’ve liked how they’ve played these two thirds or three-quarters of the season. I’ve liked the veteran leadership of the team, I’ve loved how you guys … played big, and how you cover so much ground and you dominate the paint but also surround the 3-point line with shooters, so I like the balance of your team, but obviously experience in the playoffs with the guys you guys have."

As a former champion, Gasol knows what it takes to win a ring in the NBA. With the Lakers, Gasol was a huge part of their two most recent championships, as his size and ability as a big man helped the Lakers raise a couple of banners.

Like when Gasol played, the Lakers have a dominant frontcourt led by Anthony Davis. The addition of Davis has been well worth the price tag to trade for him, as he has been an MVP candidate and potentially the Defensive Player of the Year.

If the Lakers are going to win a title this season, Davis and the frontcourt will play a huge part in that. In addition to Davis, Dwight Howard is having a great season, as a former teammate of Gasol, Howard is seeking to win a ring this time around in Los Angeles.

Hopefully, we will see the NBA season resume soon, as the Lakers do have a very real chance to win it all. As a former champion himself, Gasol believing in the Lakers is encouraging to hear.
