Los Angeles Chargers: Defense is one of the most improved this offseason
By Nick Ziegler
Pro Football Focus recently named the defenses that have improved the most this offseason. Along with a few others, the Los Angeles Chargers made the list.
It was a disappointing 2019 season for the Los Angeles Chargers. Just one year prior, the Chargers looked like they were contenders to compete in the AFC before they ran into the New England Patriots in the playoffs.
Last season, the Chargers were never able to get rolling. The holdout of running back Melvin Gordon might have been a bit of a distraction for the team, and even when he returned, things didn’t get better for the Chargers.
This offseason, the Chargers made a lot of changes to hopefully improve the team. On the offensive side of the ball, there were some noticeable departures with Philip Rivers and Gordon signing elsewhere.
Even though the Chargers might take a dip on offense this season, their defense has the potential to be one of the best in the league with their offseason additions. Recently, Pro Football Focus listed the Chargers as one of the teams who improved their defense the most this offseason.
This offseason, the Chargers were able to upgrade their secondary by adding Chris Harris to an already talented secondary. The loss of Derwin James last season was a big one for the Chargers’ defense, as he missed 11 games and the defense missed him.
However, with James back and the addition of Harris, the Chargers could have one of the best secondaries in the NFL.
On the front line, the Chargers also added Linval Joseph in the middle of their defensive line. Joseph should help compliment Joey Bosa on the inside, as the Chargers hope his presence will improve their pass rush. In addition to Bosa, Jerry Tillery will be entering his second season and should improve.
While the free-agent moves were good, the Chargers also traded up to get Kenneth Murray in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Murray could be a great help for the Chargers in the run game right from the start at the linebacker position.
This unit overall has a lot of talent and should be good against the pass next season. Barring any injuries, expect the Chargers to have one of the better defenses in the NFL next season.
