Rams News: Wide receiver corps ranked 15th by Pro Football Focus
By Nick Ziegler
Recent Rams news is that PFF recently ranked all of the wide receiver corps in the NFL. For the Rams, they came in around the middle of the pack.
As we get closer to the start of the 2020 season, the Rams are hoping to bounce back after missing the playoffs in 2019.
While the Rams did go 9-7 last season, they never really felt like a contender or a playoff team with a lot of bad losses. This offseason, the Rams made some notable changes on the offensive side of the ball.
First, Todd Gurley was let go after a down season. It wasn’t too long ago that Gurley was considered to be one of the best running backs in the league. However, he didn’t look like that same player last season, and his knee issues aren’t something that is going to get better.
After they released Gurley, the Rams then traded Brandin Cooks to the Houston Texans for a second-round pick. Like Gurley, Cooks had a down season, and with concussion issues, the Rams decided to move on from the still young and talented receiver.
With the loss of Cooks, Pro Football Focus recently ranked the Rams wide receiver corps at 15th in the NFL.
Even though Cooks had a down season, he has been a 1,000-yard receiver multiple times in his career and his departure will surely be felt in one way or another. With Cooks gone, the Rams will be relying heavily on Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp. This is still a very talented 1-2 punch for the Rams, but neither is the big-play threat that Cooks is.
After a down season for the offense and losing Cooks, the Rams’ wide receiver corps will need someone like Josh Reynolds or Van Jefferson to step up next season.
With Jared Goff coming off a sub-par season, the passing offense of the Rams will be highly watched. Seeing their wide receiver corps being ranked in the middle of the pack is a fair assessment at this point, as we will have to see how they do without Cooks next season and who steps into the role.
