Lakers Rumors: Pau Gasol would like to play his final season in Los Angeles
By Nick Ziegler
Recent Lakers rumors have been about a potential return of Pau Gasol for his final season in the NBA before he retires.
With the NBA set to resume soon, most Lakers rumors have been about how the league will be starting up again. However, there is always speculation about what could happen for the franchise in the offseason.
Recently, former Laker Pau Gasol spoke about his desire to play one more season in the NBA before retiring. As an aging big man, Gasol’s body has started to fall victim to father time. However, if his foot is alright, Gasol has stated his desire to play one more year.
In a recent interview with Tales Azzoni of the Associated Press, Gasol stated that he would like to play his final season with either the Lakers or overseas with Barca. Here’s what Gasol had to say.
"“My intention is to play another season if the foot is OK, either in the NBA or in Europe,” he said. “A final season with the Lakers is attractive, finishing at Barça is attractive, but you have to see the real possibilities and see what situation would be best for the circumstances of the moment.”"
As one of the best Lakers in the last two decades, seeing Gasol having a farewell tour with the Lakers would be great to see. Gasol is a two-time champion with the Lakers and should find himself in the Hall of Fame one day. Also, Gasol could very well have his name and number in the Staples Center one day.
On the court, it is hard to say what Gasol would be able to bring to the Lakers at this point in his career. For the Lakers, they have three solid big men on the roster right now in Anthony Davis, JaVale McGee, and Dwight Howard. Considering how well all three of them have played, the Lakers would likely want to keep that group together. However, Howard might be a desired free agent this offseason after his bounce back.
While Gasol might be interested in finishing his career with the Lakers, the Lakers would need to see how healthy he could be. If the Lakers did sign him, he would need to be able to provide some minutes at the center position, as he certainly isn’t a power forward anymore. Even though it would be great to see, we will have to wait and see what happens with the roster before Gasol could be considered.
