Lakers Rumors: Kyle Kuzma is seeking insurance for resumed season
By Nick Ziegler
Recent Lakers rumors are that Kyle Kuzma wants to get insurance for when the season resumes to protect himself.
As we wait for the NBA season to resume, there has been a lot of Lakers rumors about the upcoming resuming of the season.
Despite the league and the players association agreeing on a deal, there has been a significant group of players that don’t want to resume the season until racial issues are resolved. This is a very serious matter and one that has seemingly caused a divide in the players union.
In addition to those issues, players who are up for extensions this summer are also looking to protect themselves. With a lot of uncertainty about how players will react to training camp and the resuming of the season, players like Kyle Kuzma of the Los Angeles Lakers, who are eligible to receive an extension this offseason want to protect themselves.
Here are the players who are seeking insurance for themselves according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
"Miami’s Bam Adebayo, Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox, the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kyle Kuzma, Utah’s Donovan Mitchell and Boston’s Jayson Tatum — five players with significant star and earning power — talked with executive director Michele Roberts and senior counsel Ron Klempner about the NBPA facilitating talks with the league on possible insurance allowances for players, sources said."
For players like Kuzma who has yet to receive his big payday, taking the necessary steps to protect himself is very important. Considering how well he played in his first and second season in the NBA, Kuzma was a real bargain for the Lakers, as most rookies and sophomores don’t score over 15 points a game.
However, this season has been a down one for Kuzma. Likely due to a foot injury with Team USA, Kuzma got off to a slow start this season and never really found his groove.
Now that the league is set to resume, Kuzma might be able to get off to a better start with the league restarting after an extended break. For the Lakers, if Kuzma plays well, it is hard to imagine that they wouldn’t be able to win it all. Compared to his first two seasons in the league, Kuzma hasn’t even been close to that production. If he is an efficient piece off the bench, the Lakers will be getting a huge boost.
With some issues now emerging about the season resuming, it will be interesting to monitor what happens in the coming weeks. For Kuzma, getting insurance on himself seems like a no-brainer with a big extension likely coming soon.
