Los Angeles Rams: 5 burning questions on offense
By Usayd Koshul
5. What impact will offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell have?
The Rams have a new offensive coordinator for the 2020 season but it will still be Sean McVay who will be calling the plays on offense. The key thing to understand here is the connection between McVay and O’Connell, both of whom worked under former Redskins head coach Jay Gruden while in Washington.
While this is the first time that McVay and O’Connell will work together, which does bring up the question: What kind of impact will O’Connell have on the offense? He’ll likely be responsible for putting together a gameplan to help the offense succeed each week.
As mentioned above, McVay will still be calling plays. The reality of things is that McVay handing over playcalling duties to O’Connell would require two things. First, O’Connell will need to have a sound knowledge of the offense. While he does possess this, McVay knows the offense even better due to being the one who put the scheme together.
Second, O’Connell’s first season will be spent building relationships with players. Normally, this is something that would have been done throughout mini-camps and offseason team activities but with the current pandemic, it is not possible.
Overall, O’Connell will have somewhat of an impact in 2020 but he still won’t be the loudest voice in the room simply due to the presence of McVay, who’s proven that he can continue to adapt and innovate as needed.
