Chargers Rumors: 3 Trades to benefit Justin Herbert
By Ryan Heckman
Trade No. 3: Joe Thuney for a third-round pick
Building around a rookie quarterback takes talent at skill positions, sure. But, the best thing you can do for him is to give him the best possible offensive line. The Chargers have a fairly rock-solid right side of the line with Bryan Bulaga and Trai Turner, both whom they acquired this offseason. Mike Pouncey is also locked in at center.
But, they could use an upgrade at left guard. Dan Feeny is slotted in as the starter right now, with Forrest Lamp behind him. If you take last year, for example, Feeney allowed five sacks, which was tied for ninth-most at his position. He was also penalized seven times, good for the 12th-most at his position.
The New England Patriots decided to franchise tag guard Joe Thuney, but according to a report, they will try to lower his cap number by restructuring a deal for him. Maybe, Bill Belichick simply doesn’t want to see the Patriots pay him long-term.
The Chargers have the space to trade for Thuney, and boy would it thrill Herbert. He’d have a much-improved line from where the group was at a year ago.
