– Provides more depth
As we get ready for the start of the resumed season, there will be a ton of questions and concerns moving forward for the NBA. With the teams being in a “bubble”, the league is hoping to limit their exposure to others to keep everyone healthy.
However, there is no guarantee that a player won’t get the virus in the bubble and be forced to leave the team. This means that having quality depth is going to be important. While having a deep roster is important always, it might be even more so with the potential of injury along with a global virus.
With the addition of Smith, the Lakers are adding someone that can be a starter if need be or come off the bench as a part of the rotation. Even without Bradley, the Lakers have some good options at guard, as they recently added Dion Waiters as well before the season was suspended.
Having Waiters, Smith, Caruso, Danny Green, and Rajon Rondo will give Frank Vogel a lot of flexibility depending on what lineup he needs for a certain situation. The Lakers as of now are still deep in the frontcourt, but adding Smith to the backcourt just gives them some more security and flexibility.
