Dodgers: 3 Options to replace David Price in the rotation
By Nick Ziegler
Dustin May
The second option for the Dodgers is another one of their youngsters in Dustin May. May also made his debut for the Dodgers last season and became quite popular with his long hair. However, compared to Gonsolin, the stats weren’t quite as good for May.
Last season in 14 games, May totaled a 3.63 ERA in 34.2 innings with 32 strikeouts. The numbers were certainly still good for May, but not as good compared to Gonsolin.
What might help May make his case for being a starter is the splits that he had as a starter and reliever for the Dodgers last season. As a starter, May totaled a 2.82 ERA in 22 innings with a WHIP of 1.075.
As a reliever, the stats weren’t very good for May, as he totaled a 5.11 ERA in 12.2 innings pitched. May’s strikeouts per inning were better as a reliever as expected, but some pitchers are just better as a starter compared to out of the bullpen.
Compared to Gonsolin, who was pretty much the same as a reliever or a starter statistically, the Dodgers might be better off using May over Gonsolin in the role. While the sample size is small, May just simply wasn’t great out of the bullpen last season.
