Los Angeles Lakers: 3 Players who must step up with Rajon Rondo out
By Nick Ziegler
Dion Waiters
The final player that will have to step up with Rondo out is Dion Waiters. After staying pat at the trade deadline and not getting a secondary ball-handler and playmaker, the Lakers decided to make some additions in the buyout market. One of those additions was Dion Waiters.
Throughout his career, Waiters has been a solid player in the NBA. While he might not have lived up to the hype of being the fourth overall pick, Waiters had had some productive seasons in the league.
However, of late, Waiters has been a hard person to figure out. After playing well for the Miami Heat for a few seasons, Waiters looked like he fell out of favor there. Now, he will be looking to once again prove himself.
Even though Waiters hasn’t played much this season, he does fit a need for the Lakers. Waiters is arguably at his best with the ball in his hands in a playmaker role. The Lakers could certainly use Waiters with the second unit to lead the squad and set up teammates.
If Waiters is in shape and ready to go when the season resumes, he might be used as the backup point guard and primary ball-handler when James is off the court. Considering Rondo didn’t light it up in this role, Waiters might be able to carve out a significant role off the bench.
