After seven weeks of the NFL season, it is clear that the LA Chargers made a wise decision to draft Justin Herbert.

Coming into the offseason for the LA Chargers, they knew that they would need to address the quarterback position. After letting Phillip Rivers walk in free agency, the Chargers knew that the team would look different in 2020.

In 2019, the Chargers brought in Tyrod Taylor to be a potential replacement for Rivers. Since Taylor was on the team last season, he was comfortable taking over as the starting quarterback this season.

After a strange summer that was limited because of the coronavirus, Taylor was named the starting quarterback for Week 1. Taylor was able to get the Chargers a Week 1 win, but he suffered a rib injury in the victory. Unfortunately for Taylor, he received a pain shot that punctured his lung just before Week 2, and Justin Herbert was thrown right into the mix.

Prior to being drafted, there was a lot of talk about Herbert as a prospect. There were a lot of different views about what type of player he would be, but most agreed that it would take time for him.

However, Herbert has taken the league by storm and looks like a potential face of the franchise type player for the Chargers. In five games this season, Herbert has totaled 1,512 passing yards, 12 passing touchdowns, and just three interceptions.

For the rest of the season, Herbert is projected to total 4,112 passing yards, 38 passing touchdowns, and eight interceptions. If he ends up close to those numbers, he could be in the conversation for the Rookie of the Year award. In addition to his ability to throw the ball well, Herbert has also totaled 125 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Even though it is early on in his career, Herbert looks like the real deal for the Chargers. Hopefully, he can continue to get better and that will help the Chargers win some games.
