The Los Angeles Lakers finally made their long-anticipated move and signed a center. After the Mark Williams trade was rescinded due to a failed physical, the Lakers were desperately searching for a big man to replace Anthony Davis. On Tuesday, it was reported that the Lakers were signing free agent Alex Len.
However, the Lakers may not be done adding to their roster. The Athletic's Jovan Buha reported on his podcast that the team may be looking to add another center from the buyout market and identified three players they may be interested in.
Lakers Potentially Interested in 3 Centers Who Could Be Bought Out
Buha names Chris Boucher, Kelly Olynyk, and Larry Nance Jr. as names that the Lakers could look to sign if they were available.
All three players are currently under contract but have been identified as potential buyout candidates. Boucher is a rim-protecting, floor-spacing center that could be an upgrade over the Lakers' current options. Olynyk is a liability defensively but has a ton of offensive talent with his passing and shooting. Nance Jr. is a solid defender who can guard multiple positions but has durability concerns at this stage of his career.
The Pelicans have shown no indication that they would buy Olynyk out and make him a free agent. Plus, he has one more guaranteed year on his deal. Boucher and Nance, on the other hand, are expiring contracts. The Raptors and the Hawks are both in rebuilding modes and should presumably be interested in parting ways with the veteran centers.
The Lakers would need to waive one more player to open a roster spot to sign someone else. Cam Reddish is the most likely candidate there, but whether that will be needed will depend on who hits the market in the next few weeks.
