3. Cam Reddish, SF

Cam Reddish’s career has gone from promising lottery pick to role player with the Lakers. The 10th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Reddish spent over two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks before being traded to the New York Knicks at the 2022 trade deadline. Reddish lasted just under a year in New York when he was traded to the Portland Trailblazers in 2023 and signed as a free agent on a two-year, $4.6 million deal the following summer.

Reddish’s time with the Lakers has carried some more ups and downs. While he averaged 5.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 20.5 minutes per game last season, he also was able to make an impact with his effort on the defensive end. Although he caught the attention of J.J. Reddick and made his way into the starting lineup earlier this year, he’s been in a reserve role recently and is currently dealing with a personal issue that forced him to miss Saturday’s game against the Knicks.

It’s unlikely that Reddish will ever be the star he was supposed to be coming out of Duke. But he could become the player that another 2019 first-round pick has become – Nickeil Alexander-Walker. The 17th overall pick in that draft, Alexander-Walker had trouble out of the gate with the New Orleans Pelicans and Utah Jazz but was sent to the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of the trade that brought D’Angelo Russell to Los Angeles ahead of the 2023 trade deadline.

Alexander-Walker is a better 3-point shooter than Reddish but his main value is on the defensive end. It’s also a reminder that players can have a second act in their career, even if they’ve been traded multiple times.

At this point, Reddish seems to be capped with the Lakers and with an affordable salary, a team could be willing to take a flier in an effort to find a role player.
