2. Indianapolis Colts
The Colts’ quarterback situation has been a mess since Andrew Luck abruptly retired in 2019. Phillip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan have all come to watch their careers die in Indianapolis but the Colts may not have a choice but to take a risk on another aging quarterback next season.
Anthony Richardson was supposed to be the Colts’ franchise quarterback after he was selected with the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft, but he’s been a disappointment so far. The Florida product has completed just 50.6 percent of his passes for 2,391 yards, 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in just 15 games but things boiled over when he tapped out of a game in Houston last season.
Richardson spent the rest of the season in and out of the starting lineup with Joe Flacco but the Colts still seem committed to his long-term development. Even then, the Colts have been a disappointment under general manager Chris Ballard, missing the playoffs in each of the past four seasons.
The Colts need an overhaul going into next season and may need to hit on multiple free agents and draft picks to be a legitimate contender. But they weren’t far away from making the playoffs as their 8-9 record was two games back of the Texans for the AFC South title.
With the goal within reach, it may make sense for the Colts to reach for Stafford as a short-term solution. Richardson may remain a part of the Colts’ long-term vision. But at 22, he could take another year to learn behind a future Hall of Famer. That may be wishful thinking but a realistic scenario for a regime trying to win games.
