5 Rams Leaving Los Angeles in the New Year
By Joe Summers
3. Jimmy Garoppolo - QB
The Rams need to ensure they have a young quarterback behind Mathew Stafford who can develop into the next great Los Angeles signal caller. Stetson Bennett's pedigree doesn't suggest superstardom, and it feels increasingly likely that this team will draft someone in 2025 or 2026 to begin learning Sean McVay's system.
Garoppolo is already 33 years old and there are a number of teams with less established rosters that could give the veteran a clearer path to playing time. Even if Stafford went down with injury at some point, Los Angeles would probably give Bennett a look since Garoppolo is already a proven commodity.
Everyone knows what he is, for better and worse. He could theoretically lead you to the Super Bowl in a perfect situation, though his faults will ultimately stop you from actually winning it. Garoppolo is comparable to a poor man's Jared Goff, and the Rams would be wise to find another backup option for Stafford's age-37 season.
During his career, Garoppolo has a remarkable 43-20 record as a starter. He's completed 67.4% of his passes with 94 TDs to 51 interceptions, but every team he's been on has been worse for it overall. We saw the 49ers' system prove itself once Brock Purdy stepped in, and it's notable that no other team managed to get the same success out of the journeyman.
The best way to transition to the future is to ensure that there are developing players behind your aging veterans. Garoppolo is a servicable backup but he's not part of the team's outlook in 2025 and beyond, making it a logical decision to find someone new and younger to serve as Stafford's understudy.
