Chargers Release Disappointing Player One Day After Trade Deadline
By Cem Yolbulan
The Los Angeles Chargers have built momentum in recent weeks to improve to 5-3 for the season as we enter the second half of the 2024 NFL campaign. With a serious chance of making the postseason in the AFC, the Chargers are feeling pretty good about where they are as an organization.
As a result, they chose to stand pat at the trade deadline. Chargers GM Joe Hortiz opted against making any moves and retained the roster to make a postseason run.
This doesn't mean that there won't be transactions. Like every other team in the league, the Chargers will make cuts and signings to address their depth throughout the rest of the season. In fact, they announced a move on Wednesday morning. Per Chargers insider Daniel Popper, the team is releasing veteran tight end Eric Tomlinson.
NFL News: Chargers Release TE Eric Tomlinson
This doesn't come as a surprise for Chargers fans. Even though his snap count has increased since the start of the season, Tomlinson was one of the more disappointing members of the team.
Appearing in 124 offensive and 85 special teams snaps in eight games, the 32-year-old has failed to make an impact. In fact, he has a miserable 37.4 offensive grade on PFF after making two catches in four targets for nine yards for the season. He had one dropped pass and two penalties during his time in Los Angeles.
Tomlinson was initially signed to the Chargers practice squad before getting elevated to the active roster on September 7. Whether the Bolts will sign another tight end to replace him remains to be seen, but Will Dissly and Hayden Hurst should continue to get the lion's share of the workload in the meantime.
