Chargers Star Hints at Retirement After Wild Card Loss to Texans
By Joe Summers
The Chargers are left searching for answers after a bitterly disappointing 32-12 playoff loss during Wild Card Weekend to the Texans. Unfortunately, one star player is hinting at retirement following the defeat.
Four-time All-Pro linebacker Khalil Mack, who had six tackles and two sacks against Houston, told reporters that he's mulling retirement and doesn't know if he'll continue playing football. The writing was already on the wall for one of the most dominant players of this generation, though it'd still hurt to see Mack walk away.
He's an unrestricted free agent and turns 34 in February. Considering all that he's accomplished, Mack may decide it's time to hang the cleats up.
Chargers LB Khalil Mack Considering Retirement After Wild Card Loss
"Man, it’s a lot of different thoughts in my head right now,” Mack said after the game. "I can’t really speak on a definitive decision in terms of what I’m going to do because I don’t know if I’m going to play football moving forward, so there’s some things I gotta talk through with my wife, spend some time with my kids and try not to make a rash decision after a loss."
If Mack chooses to play, he'll have a long list of suitors. The nine-time Pro Bowler has 31 sacks over the last three years and could certainly join a contender to chase a Super Bowl ring before he calls it quits.
Either way, it appears that his time in Los Angeles might be over regardless. The Chargers had an impressive turnaround in Jim Harbaugh's first season though they aren't true contenders at this point. For Mack, who has never experienced playoff success, it'd make sense to sign a short-term deal with an elite team to get a real shot at a Lombardi Trophy.
There are a lot of difficult questions that the organization needs to answer. Justin Herbert had a horrible playoff performance yet is still the franchise quarterback, so surrounding him with better weapons is a priority. Mack's timeline likely doesn't fit Los Angeles', making it probable that he's either retiring or playing for a different team in 2025.
He's had an incredible impact on the Chargers and replacing him won't be easy, though Harbaugh's history of producing strong defenses should make fans confident moving forward.
