Chargers Suddenly Have New Primetime Game After NFL Flex Scheduling Decision
By Joe Summers
The Chargers' strong start to the season has been noticed by the NFL, who announced Monday intentions to flex Los Angeles' matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 11 to Sunday Night Football.
After originally being scheduled for an early kickoff, the Chargers will instead get primetime attention to celebrate an exciting matchup between two playoff hopefuls. In Jim Harbaugh's first season, the team is off to a 5-3 start bolstered by a strong identity.
They'll hope to keep pace with the Chiefs in the AFC West but a Wild Card spot is the most likely outcome at this point. Should they fall to the Bengals, the playoff picture could get much more interesting.
NFL Flexes Chargers vs. Bengals in Week 11 to Sunday Night Football
Originally, the Jets and Colts held the primetime spot. Neither team is particularly competitive right now, making this a logical decision to create some excitement.
Justin Herbert is playing some of the best football of his career and the Chargers are winning games. This will serve as a major test in front of a national audience, giving Harbaugh's group a chance to officially introduce themselves to the country.
The Bengals started poorly but have rattled off three wins in their last four games. They face the Ravens on Thursday Night Football in Week 10, giving Cincinnati an extra three days of rest to prepare for Los Angeles.
Nevertheless, the Chargers face a terrible Titans squad in Week 10 themselves. It's not quite a bye, but there's a decent chance Harbaugh will be able to rest some starters late.
It's an exciting day for fans and a wise decision by the league.
