Chargers Trading for Former Playmaker Just Got More Likely After Latest Update
By Cem Yolbulan
The Los Angeles Chargers are 3-2 to start the season and they are continuing their chase for the top spot in the AFC West. In their next four games, they are playing Arizona, New Orleans, Cleveland, and Tennessee, giving them an excellent chance to build momentum and go on a winning streak.
In order to do so, however, the Chargers likely need upgrades to the roster. Their biggest need since the start of the season is in the wide receiver room. Rookie Ladd McConkey, Josh Palmer, and Quentin Johnston get the majority of the workload there but it is not a group that makes you feel great about the team's postseason prospects.
Fortunately for the Chargers, there is a newly available trade option that could be exactly what they are looking for. Former Charger Mike Williams is reportedly on the Bolts' radar, per The Athletic's Dianna Russini.
NFL Rumors: Chargers Reached Out to the Jets for WR Mike Williams
Williams signed with the Jets in the offseason after the Chargers released him with one year left on his contract. The 30-year-old veteran had suffered an ACL tear in Week 3 of the 2023 season and wasn't able to play the rest of the way. His tenure in New York hasn't been what he had hoped for.
The crowded WR room that included Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard meant that Williams was not a big part of the offense. Now that the Jets traded for Davante Adams, it will be even harder for Williams to find a role.
The Chargers, on the other hand, could use a competent receiver like Williams. They currently have the 26th-ranked offense in the league and average 153.2 passing yards per game. Someone with Williams' catch radius, speed, and familiarity with the team could give LA a boost for the rest of the season.
