Dodgers Beat Mets in Game 6, Advance to 2024 World Series Against Yankees
By Rami Hanna
In a survive-or-go-home situation for the New York Mets, the Los Angeles Dodgers made sure to come out swinging and end up advancing to their second World Series appearance in five years.
The Dodgers decided to go with a bullpen game in case they needed a starting pitcher for a possible game seven on Monday night. The first man up was Michael Kopech who has been phenomenal with Los Angeles as a closer since he was acquired by them. But starting the game for them against a red-hot Mets team was too much and an error would allow Francisco Lindor to get the first run.
The bottom of the first inning was the bang for their buck that the Boys in Blue needed when Shohei Ohtani opened up the game with a single. Teoscar Hernandez would follow it up with his own big shot that allowed Ohtani to reach third before Tommy Edman yanked it into left field to get the double. Both Ohtani and Hernandez reached home to take the lead against a never-say-die Mets team.
Following Kopech's one inning played, the Dodgers bullpen would bring out Ben Casparius who allowed a walk and two hits before Anthony Banda would be brought in next. Despite being caught in a bases-loaded situation, he was able to get himself out of the mess against Jeff McNeil with a huge strikeout to keep the lead in Los Angeles's favor heading into the bottom of the third.
The Dodgers have been so good at hitting with runners on base and that was the case in the bottom of the third inning. Edman came back up to the diamond for another opportunity to put a couple of runs on the scoreboard and boy did he ever.
Edman would knock a huge bomb into deep left field to get the two-run homer to extend the lead for the Boys in Blue who were not looking forward to another game against the Mets.
That, however, was not the end for the Dodgers in the bottom of the third. The fans in attendance got to witness the Fresh Prince of Los Angeles, Will Smith, knock another huge bomb deep into the center field to put Los Angeles up six-to-one against New York.
The Dodgers bullpen worked overtime and pulled out their best defense to prevent multiple runs from the Mets who had bases-loaded to capitalize on it. Ohtani would once again come up in the bottom of the sixth inning where a blooper into center field prevented a flyball out. In return, it would be Smith who made his way back home to add another run onto the scoreboard against the Mets.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Kodai Senga was brought in by the Mets to show some life for them. Still, all it did was allow an extra three more runs to be shot in by the Dodgers who made the final inning for New York a mission-impossible extravaganza to try and reach a game seven that had no chance of happening.
The Dodgers would keep the Mets scoreless for the top of the eighth and ninth innings where Blake Treinen was brought in for two innings for the first time in three years. He started off the eighth inning by striking out the Mets side to keep them from reaching for an upset.
In the ninth inning, Treinen closed the game and sealed the deal to send the Los Angeles Dodgers to the 2024 World Series against the New York Yankees, starting this Friday on Fox.
Tommy Edman was named the National League Championship Series MVP after the campaign he had which resulted in huge wins and high scores to allow the Dodgers to make it this far. Now Los Angeles is four wins away from getting the parade they never got after winning in the pandemic year.
