The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to explore every avenue to improve the team's lack of depth at center. With Alex Len and Jaxson Hayes poised to hit free agency, the team is going to need to add at least 2-3 quality options at the position. One former Laker has been pointed to as a possibility in Brook Lopez. Lopez joined the Lakers before the 2017-18 season and was underwhelming after having a great previous season for the Brooklyn Nets.

According to a recent report by Gery Woelfel, free-agent Brook Lopez is expected to generate considerable interest. Leading to an NBA executive noting, "I'm sure the Lakers have already talked to him." This is a noteworthy quote that could offer the Lakers an answer to their biggest current positional concern.

Lopez has spent the last seven seasons as a much-needed size and defensive anchor for the Bucks. This was a pivotal role that helped lead the franchise to a championship run three years ago. Still, the Lakers should be very careful before they consider a potential reunion with the veteran rim protector.

Lakers Should Be Hesitant to Attempt a Reunion With Brook Lopez

Already, the Los Angeles Lakers aren't exactly the fastest team in the league with Luka running point. Add in an aging LeBron James, and you need to add a center capable of switching and covering a lot of ground. Lopez signing with the Lakers would be a solid move for the team if it is in a reserve role. However, signing an aging Lopez as your starting center and prize offseason addition sets this team up for failure.

Look at what the Dallas Mavericks did two seasons ago, adding stretch fives who willingly shot and protected the rim. It was a team that wanted to run at every opportunity. The understanding was that if you could get ahead of the ball and find open space or attack the rim, Luka was going to find you. It is the type of team the Lakers should be attempting to build this offseason.

Brook Lopez simply doesn't fit this description for a team that needs to grow younger and more athletic. Potential trade examples of better fits are Daniel Gafford or Jarrett Allen. The Lakers need to look at these types of players who can run the floor a bit better as starting options.

If Lopez is willing to take a team-friendly deal to come off the bench, perhaps there is a fit. This would be a bit of a surprise considering the report notes Lopez is expected to receive a "lot of interest," likely ruling out a potential bench role. With this in mind, Lopez should stay a part of the team's past as they turn the page and begin the Luka era.
