Former Chargers assistant coach James Cregg was fired by the Raiders on Sunday night following another embarrassing loss, this time to the Bengals 41-24.

Cregg served as Las Vegas' offensive line coach after spending two seasons as the 49ers' assistant offensive line coach. The Raiders also let go of quarterback coach Rich Scangarello and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.

Antonio Pierce is clearly trying to cover his tracks in the midst of a lost 2-7 season. Cregg's rise suggests he's a promising coach, though Vegas felt differently with their first moves to clean house.

Former Chargers Assistant OL Coach James Cregg Fired by Raiders

After playing at Colorado State as a lineman, he joined the coaching staff in 1997 before making his way to the professional ranks. The Chargers gave him his third NFL gig, all within the AFC West, poaching him from the Broncos after the 2016 season.

It's unclear if Los Angeles would welcome a return, as Jim Harbaugh's staff is set with a team competing for a playoff spot. Cregg will likely find work quickly this offseason though should have time to evaluate his options.

He was LSU's offensive line coach and run game coordinator when they won the National Championship with Joe Burrow. If the Bengals wind up firing Zac Taylor and his staff, perhaps Cregg could reunite with Burrow in Cincinnati.

This is all merely speculation for now. The Raiders are in disarray while the Chargers are ahead of schedule. Being 5-3 is fun already but seeing a division rival fall apart makes the positive start even sweeter.

Similar to most of the decisions Las Vegas makes, they may wind up regretting letting these particular coaches go.
