Former Chargers WR Switching Teams for Second Time This Year After Trade
By Jovan Alford
When the Los Angeles Chargers shockingly released veteran wide receiver Mike Williams in the offseason, many fans wondered where he would play next.
Williams wasn’t on the free agent market for long as he was signed six days later by the New York Jets to a one-year, $10 million contract. On paper, the addition of Williams seemed like a great move by the Jets as he could be paired up with Garrett Wilson.
However, Williams couldn’t recapture the momentum he had in Los Angeles with the Jets. The former Chargers wideout had 12 receptions (21 targets) for 166 yards in nine games.
With his struggles and the addition of Davante Adams, it was only a matter of time before the Jets moved on from Williams. On Tuesday, the 30-year-old wideout was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Pittsburgh traded a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Jets for the veteran wide receiver.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that the Chargers looked into a reunion with Williams, but he ultimately landed in the AFC North. The Chargers still have some time before the 4 p.m. ET deadline to address the WR room.
Williams will try to turn his 2024 season around with the Steelers, who desperately need another receiver alongside George Pickens.
When healthy, Williams has been one of the better WR2s in the league and will hope to show that in the Steel City. Williams' last season in LA was cut short by a torn ACL.
