The Los Angeles Lakers fan base has feelings when it comes to Russell Westbrook's failed stint with the franchise. Both sides were ready to part ways by the end of the veteran's tenure, with things growing uncomfortable. What was a bad idea from the start played out in a predictable fashion and left both sides frustrated. However, what the current free agency search and seasons since have illustrated is what many have long known: Westbrook simply isn't a winning player.

It is simply the harsh reality of a player who has spent time with Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and Nikola Jokic, winning nothing of note during his time with the trio. Three of the greatest superstars to ever step foot on the court couldn't make it work with the guard when the games mattered most.

The problem for Westbrook continues to be an inability to gauge the situation and dial his intensity to the moment. Whether there is one second remaining or it is the start of the game, the guard will play with the same reckless abandon. While this does create positive plays at times, it often results in key mistakes that open the door for the wrong team.

Former Los Angeles Lakers Bust Russell Westbrook Continues Frustrating Free Agency Search

With this in mind, it is easy to understand why Westbrook's free agency search has stretched so long into the offseason. Contending teams realize that the veteran cannot be relied on, and young teams don't want to bring in this example. The only fit for the former Laker is going to be an organization that is desperate enough to believe they can change history and get the best out of the guard.

This is yet to come to fruition with Westbrook remaining a free agent and searching for his next team. It is a sign of just how far the former OKC star has fallen since his MVP years. Even looking back at his best seasons, it is now clear why the numbers never translated to winning. As great a player as the guard has been, the moment often felt far too big.

As Jokic and LeBron have both recently illustrated, even the wisest superstars aren't going to prevent Russ from making typical mistakes. Limiting the veteran's free agent market with teams wary of becoming the next in a long list of failed landing spots.
