Lakers Make Big Bronny James Decision After Embarrassing Loss to Grizzlies
By Cem Yolbulan
After winning the first three games of the season, the Los Angeles Lakers reverted back to their old ways on their five-game road trip. Culminating in an embarrassing showing against the Grizzlies in Memphis, the Lakers went 1-4 during that stretch to fall to .500 for the season.
This is the first big challenge new head coach JJ Redick is facing in Los Angeles. He already called out the team for lack of effort on Wednesday night and singled out D'Angelo Russell for his poor showing.
The Lakers have an excellent opportunity to get back on track with three home games against beatable opponents: the Sixers, Raptors, and the Grizzlies. While the team is getting ready for that slate, the front office made a big move regarding Bronny James.
Per Shams Charania of ESPN, the Lakers are assigning the rookie to their G League affiliate, South Bay Lakers.
NBA News: Lakers Send Bronny James to G League
Reportedly, Bronny will be on the Lakers roster for Friday's game against Philadelphia before joining the G League team for their season opener on Saturday.
This shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody. Bronny James shared the court with his father in the season opener, a very special moment for both. He played in three more games for the Lakers since then, for a total of 13 minutes, scoring four points in the process. However, he was always going to spend the majority of his time in South Bay in his rookie season.
That is typical for second-round picks, especially 55th overall selections like James. He needs as many reps as he can get before he is ready to compete in the NBA. In the G League, he will get a chance to work on his game and build his confidence and skill level. Depending on how the Lakers' season goes in terms of injuries and performance, he might get chances in the NBA later in his rookie campaign.
