Lakers Forward Takes Major Step Toward His Return from Injury
By Cem Yolbulan
While Lakers fans are waiting for a major move before the trade deadline, they are about to get a significant boost within the roster. Jarred Vanderbilt, who has yet to play this season after undergoing right foot surgery in the offseason, just took a big step in his return to the lineup.
Earlier in the week, Vanderbilt participated in five-on-five practice for the first time. It was announced that he would be re-evaluated in one week, per The Athletic's Jovan Buha.
On Friday, the Lakers announced that they assigned Vanderbilt to the G League's South Bay Lakers, then immediately recalled him. ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported that this was so that Vando got extra time on the court as he progresses in his return. He then participated in the Lakers' practice at 11 am.
Jarred Vanderbilt One Step Closer to Making His Lakers Return
Vanderbilt hasn't played since February 1, 2024. He was only able to appear in 29 games last season after playing an important role in the Lakers' conference finals run in the 2022-23 season. He was acquired at the trade deadline that season and made a big difference with his size, athleticism, and defensive intensity.
The Lakers desperately need more defensive versatility. Their defense ranks as the 22nd-best unit in the league in terms of points allowed per possession. Vanderbilt is one of the best defenders on the team, thanks to his ability to guard multiple positions, including the point of attack.
If he can get back to his old self, Vanderbilt will be a solid addition to the Lakers rotation. At the same time, there is a chance the Lakers can use him in a potential trade. His $10.7 million salary for this season makes him an intriguing trade chip. If Vanderbilt proves himself to be healthy and plays well in the next few weeks, the Lakers would seriously think about including him in trade packages to get a starter-caliber player.
