Luka Doncic is the floor general of the future for the Los Angeles Lakers. There are no questions about this. Regardless of that fact, the front office would be wise to find an upgrade behind him on the depth chart.
While it doesn't mean that a partnership between the two sides is imminent, one veteran point guard is reportedly telegraphing his interest in relocating back to the City of Angels before the free agency period officially opens at 6 p.m. ET on June 30.
Not to speak for the man himself, but it seems safe to say that the front office would have the full support of superstar forward LeBron James if they were to pursue the veteran.
Lakers' Odds of Landing Chris Paul in FA Skyrocket After Latest Report
The San Antonio Spurs have no need for Chris Paul on their roster moving forward after selecting Dylan Harper with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. With the veteran set to enter unrestricted free agency next week, Paul's longstanding relationship with LeBron could be enough to sway the future Hall of Famer in the direction of the Purple and Gold.
As we previously discussed, the depth behind Doncic in the backcourt is an area that could be upgraded during the offseason. Paul could likely be had on a one-year deal at a reasonable cost and fill that void for Los Angeles. Despite his age, Paul put to rest any doubts about his ability to get the job done after playing in all 82 games for the Spurs this past season and averaging 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 3.6 rebounds in 28 minutes per game.
Paul wants to play closer to his home in Los Angeles. The Lakers could use a player of his caliber to fill in the minutes where Doncic is off the floor to keep the offense humming at a high level. If the money can be figured out, which shouldn't be an issue given Paul's career earnings, and the role is the right fit, don't be surprised to continue to hear the Lakers bantered about as a rumored destination for the point guard.
