The biggest move of the Los Angeles Lakers offseason thus far has been the addition of Deandre Ayton. While the move is earning mixed reviews there is no denying it makes the roster better. It will be Ayton earning all the minutes Jaxson Hayes was given at the end of last season. This provides a bit of rim protection and a lob threat for Luka to attempt to utilize.
Considering how great Hayes looked in the final regular season games there is reason to wonder what version of Ayton the Lakers might get with LeBron and Luka elevating the big man. However, this isn't yet the focus with the team needing to continue to add pieces.
One area of needed improvement is looking for consistent bench scoring and leadership. This is especially going to be the case if the trade rumors surrounding Austin Reaves come to fruition. With the guard turning down the Lakers' extension offer, it seems increasingly possible Los Angeles will consider making a move. Despite the talent level of the guard, it is hard to see a path to winning it all with the team's current core. With this in mind, the Lakers should consider adding a former Ayton teammate who has been through nearly every situation imaginable.
The Lakers Should Consider Adding Chris Paul
Point guard Chris Paul is no longer the scoring force he was in his prime. The veteran is clearly taking a step back both by choice and due to age. Still, there is immense value in having his leadership and presence on the roster. Turn back the clock to the last Los Angeles championship run in the bubble and consider the veteran presence on that team.
Even with LeBron and Anthony Davis the Lakers prioritized bringing in experienced options. It is something the team should learn from and would set the addition of Paul. Even if the point guard isn't able to consistently produce there is immense value in having him on the roster as an experienced and calming presence.
Signing Paul is going to be met with a level of heat when you consider the veteran's age and the need for wing defenders. Still, it is a move the team should at least explore considering the potential impact and established relationship with LeBron. It is at least worth exploring as the 2025 offseason continues.
