The Los Angeles Lakers don't have to wait any longer for LeBron James' decision regarding his contract status for the 2025-26 campaign.

Entering this summer, James had the opportunity to exercise a player option in his contract that would have allowed him to enter unrestricted free agency and negotiate a deal with whatever franchise he wished. The concern that James would leave Los Angeles for another organization was, rightfully, slim, but the future Hall of Fame forward ended those conversations on Saturday.

According to a report from Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com, James is expected to pick up his $52.6 million option for the 2025-26 campaign and return to the Purple and Gold.

Lakers' LeBron James Refuses to Make Financial Sacrifice Once Again

While there is no doubt that Lakers fans are happy to see James opt in for this coming season, the front office was likely hoping that he would follow the same plan as he did last summer and sign a 1+1 deal at a slightly lower first-year salary to help the franchise add impact players at other positions.

By picking up his option, James is electing to take all the money left on the table that was owed to him by Los Angeles. After giving up roughly $2.7 million in potential salary last summer, LeBron James wanted every penny that was promised to him this year.

The argument could be made that James doesn't need the money and is doing the franchise a disservice by not taking less to build the best team around him as possible. The other side of this is also true; the Lakers committed this amount of money to James, and the choice to exercise that option was his, and his alone.

The truth of the matter is that LeBron is on a year-by-year timeline with his NBA career. Perhaps this is an indicator that the 2025-26 campaign will bring fans closer to the end of his reign as King James. Either way, Lakers fans know that LeBron is back, for sure, this season and will look to lead the Purple and Gold to the top of the mountain in the NBA yet again.
