The city of Los Angeles and surrounding areas have been devastated by wildfires since early Tuesday. The catastrophe took a turn for the worse on Wednesday as flames engulfed huge swaths of Los Angeles, causing severe damage in the area. Sparked by dry conditions and powerful winds, the fire has caused the death of five people, the destruction of 2,000 structures, and the evacuation of over 100,000 residents, per Los Angeles Times.
Sports are obviously not the priority here but this costly disaster is naturally having an impact on all aspects of life. Lakers personnel and staff are among those who have been impacted by the tragedy. Head coach JJ Redick has reportedly lost his home in the Palisades firestorm.
NBA News: Lakers-Hornets Game Postponed Due to LA Wildfires
Considering the impact the wildfire has had on the community, the NBA decided to postpone Thursday's game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Charlotte Hornets, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
Experts say that Los Angeles is still not out of danger, and fire conditions will likely continue over the next few days. Whether the Lakers or any other sports team in Los Angeles, including the Rams, who are scheduled to face off against the Vikings in the playoffs on Monday, will be able to play remains to be seen.
At this point, getting the fires under control and ensuring everyone's safety should be the priority. Once that is the case, we will surely hear more from both the NBA and the NFL about the plans going forward.
