New Lakers Trade Target Suddenly Available From Western Conference Contender
By Joe Summers
The Lakers suddenly have an ideal trade target rumored to be available, and perhaps not even Rob Pelinka could screw this one up.
Standout Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo, who rose to prominence with the Knicks as one of the best high-volume outside shooters in the NBA, is reportedly quickly wearing out his welcome in Minnesota and could soon be on the move.
DiVincenzo was just part of the trade that brought Karl Anthony-Towns to New York, yet hasn't fit in with his new organization. If the reports are true, Pelinka has no choice but to make a compelling offer for the 27-year-old guard.
Timberwolves G Donte DiVincenzo Reportedly Available via Trade
The Lakers have improved in three-point shooting, ranking 11th in the NBA at 37.6% while jumping out to a 10-5 record. Rookie Dalton Knecht's surge is largely responsible, but a reliable veteran like DiVincenzo would transform the offense nonetheless.
Especially with Rui Hachimura banged up, Knecht could slide to small forward while DiVincenzo takes over at shooting guard. Last year, he made over 40% of his three-point attempts on 8.7 per game. For his career, he's made over 37%.
Few Lakers offer than same ability to spread the floor, which would open up more space for Anthony Davis to work in the post. If a report like this is leaking before we even get to Thanksgiving, it likely wouldn't take that much to take DiVincenzo off the Timberwolves' hands.
This is an obvious move and perfect fit. Pelinka has failed at nearly every step of his tenure with the Lakers, yet this is as much of a slam-dunk move as one can make.
At the very least, he needs to make the phone call. Find out what it would take to acquire DiVincenzo and make the best possible offer you can. Otherwise, what are we even doing here?
