12 Chargers Who Won't Return Next Season
5. Joshua Kelley
I mentioned from the jump that Harbaugh is going to shake up the Chargers' backfield, and it would shock me if Josh Kelley survived the shakeup.
While he showed repeated flashes of potential through the four years on his rookie contract, he's not been nearly consistent enough to warrant a new deal when he hits free agency. He finished with a plodding average of 3.6 yards per carry, and his receiving contributions (4.8 yards per target) weren't nearly enough to make up for the rushing struggles.
Backup running backs are a dime a dozen at this point, and there are a couple easy directions to go for replacing Kelley. The Chargers can spend up a little to bring in a solid veteran, or they can draft a rookie to get someone on a team-friendly contract.
Kelley doesn't check either of those boxes. He'll be more expensive (and probably have less upside) than a rookie, but he won't be as good as a veteran that could be brought in on a similar deal.
There aren't many angles that make Kelley look like the guy for the Chargers' RB2 (or honestly, even RB3) spot, and he'll likely be allowed to walk.
