Cornerback isn't the only position on the Chargers' defensive unit that needs strengthening. The entire secondary could use some help. Fortunately for the Bolts, there are still plenty of free agent safeties available that could help them.

Perhaps the most notable amongst them is the former Denver Bronco Justin Simmons.

Simmons signed a four-year, $61 million contract extension with the Broncos in 2021 after a Pro Bowl season. With one season left on his deal, the Broncos waived him this offseason to create additional cap space.

At age 30, Simmons could potentially show signs of decline on his next team. However, it's important to note that he has been remarkably consistent and healthy throughout his eight seasons in the NFL. Just last year, he appeared in 15 games and recorded 70 tackles, three interceptions, and eight passes defended while earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro second-team honors. Even if he is not in his prime, he still instills fear into opposing quarterbacks as he finished 2023 with 66.7% completion and 89.1 passer rate when targeted.

Moreover, Simmons fills an immediate need for the Chargers. They have Alohi Gilman at free safety, but their depth behind him is a question mark. Derwin James Jr. is projected as the other starter for now but he had a down season last year, ranking 71st among 95 qualified safeties on PFF. Adding an experienced veteran like Simmons could help bring the Chargers' defense to the next level.

The Chargers are currently +325 to win the AFC West next season. They have an uphill battle against the Chiefs to have a chance to win the division. Head over to FanDuel Sportsbook now to get in on the action.
