Justin Simmons, Safety

The fact that Justin Simmons is still unsigned is one of the biggest mysteries of this offseason. The former Broncos star is the best player available on the market and the Chargers should be giving him a call, especially since he plays a position of need for Los Angeles.

The Chargers are projected to start Derwin James Jr. at strong safety to begin the season. The former All-Pro defender had a down season in 2023 and was one of the main reasons the Chargers' defense struggled all year.

Justin Simmons, on the other hand, is coming off another strong season where he earned All-Pro second team and Pro Bowl honors once again. Even though he was waived by the Broncos to save $14.5 million for next season, Simmons remains as one of the best safeties in the league.

At age 30, Simmons likely doesn't have too many years of elite defensive play left in his career. However, if he is willing to come to Los Angeles on a short deal, the Chargers would love to have his veteran competence and experience next to Alohi Gilman.

The Chargers need to increase the overall talent level of this roster after losing so many key veterans this spring. There isn't a better way to do that than to bring an elite defender like Simmons.
