3 Lakers on the Chopping Block After LeBron James Extension

After LeBron James signed a two-year max extension on Wednesday, these three Los Angeles Lakers are likely on the chopping block.

3. D'Angelo Russell, PG/SG

While the Lakers haven't been that active in recent weeks, one transaction that did occur was D'Angelo Russell picking up his $18.7 million player option last week. The former 2015 second-overall pick was probably the franchise's third-best player last season, averaging 18.0 PTS/6.3 AST/3.1 REB/0.9 STL with a 45.6 FG% and 41.5 3P% in 76 games — his most appearances since 2018-19 (81).

But just because Russell signed on for another year doesn't mean he'll spend it in Los Angeles.

After all, reports have since emerged that the Lakers could shop Russell as a piece to land a third superstar. Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports revealed Tuesday that the Brooklyn Nets are one of the top suitors for the veteran playmaker's services. The former Ohio State Buckeye previously spent two seasons in Brooklyn, so it wouldn't be shocking if he'd be open to a return.

It also makes sense that the Lakers would want to unload Russell due to his playoff disappearance. While he was far from the worst player in a Los Angeles jersey this spring, the fact that he's only averaged 13.5 points on .414/.313/.750 splits with 4.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists in the last two postseasons shows that he isn't someone who can help the Lake Show bring home another title.

With the writing likely on the wall for the 28-year-old point guard, Russell's Lakers tenure could end any day now.
