3 Lakers on Thin Ice After the NBA Draft
2. Jalen Hood-Schifino, SG/PG
Jalen Hood-Schifino was the only prospect who the Lakers selected at the 2023 NBA Draft. The former Indiana product was taken 17th overall last year following a strong season with the Hoosiers that indicated that he could have a bright future as a pro.
While Hood-Schifino is young enough to get better, it isn't a secret that his rookie performance wasn't special. The Pittsburgh, PA native barely saw any playing time in Darvin Ham's rotation, averaging 5.2 minutes across 21 appearances. He was inactive for each of Los Angeles' final 18 regular-season games and didn't even touch the floor in the playoffs.
While Ham's mediocre planning played a role in Hood-Schifino's underwhelming showing, it isn't as if the former made the most of his limited opportunities. Hood-Schifino only shot 22.2% from the floor and 13.3% from deep while tallying 1.6 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.4 assists per game. His 66 offensive rating showed how much the Lakers attack suffered with him.
Now that the Lakers added Knecht — one of the 2024 draft's best shooters — there isn't as much of a need for Hood-Schifino. General manager Rob Pelinka could opt to dangle the 21-year-old in trade discussions in hopes that a potential suitor believes that they can help the former top-20 pick reach his potential.
Hopefully, Hood-Schifino will enjoy a long-lasting NBA career. It just might not be with the Lakers.
