5 Best Remaining Free Agents the Lakers Can Still Sign
By Cem Yolbulan
Markelle Fultz
The former No. 1 overall pick has yet to find himself a new team in free agency. After struggling to establish his NBA career due to relentless injuries early on in his career, Markelle Fultz finally found a new home in Orlando, where he spent the last five seasons.
Fultz is obviously never going to live up to the hype he came into the league with. His jump shot has completely abandoned him and injuries have sapped his athleticism. At the same time, he has been able to turn himself into one of the better perimeter defenders in the league. He has good positional size and a solid wingspan. He plays with good awareness and is an engaged help defender. He is still quick and helps his team get out in transition.
Instead of paying Gabe Vincent $11 million for next season, the Lakers would likely be better off moving on and replacing him with Markelle Fultz on a minimum deal.
Lonnie Walker
Some of the best moments of Lonnie Walker's career came when he was with the Lakers in the 2022-23 season. That year, he averaged 11.7 points in 23.2 minutes per game in 56 appearances before playing a big role in the playoff rotation, especially in the second-round series against the Warriors.
Last season, he had a solid season off the bench for the Brooklyn Nets, averaging 9.7 points per game in 17.4 minutes of action. Walker doesn't do much else except for instant scoring and dynamism on the ball but that is more than enough on a minimum contract.
Walker is still only 25 years old and has clear offensive talent. He can attack closeouts and get to the basket, create his own shot, and hit three-pointers at a respectable clip. Lakers fans should be glad if the opportunity to bring him back rises.
