Anthony Davis Will Love Latest Lakers Rumor
By Cem Yolbulan
The Los Angeles Lakers remain frustratingly silent throughout the offseason, not having made any additions to the roster except for Dalton Knecht and Bronny James. Fans are eagerly waiting for improvements to the roster and new head coach JJ Redick highlighted the type of player they are looking for.
In an interview during the Las Vegas Summer League, Redick said they are targeting a "big, bruising" center to match up with the size of the Western Conference contenders. This should thrill Anthony Davis, who has repeatedly expressed his desire to play power forward, ahead of next season.
Lakers Rumors: JJ Redick Wants A Traditional Center
Anthony Davis has been playing center and battling the big, dominant centers of the NBA over the last couple of years. He was matched up with Nikola Jokic in each of the last two postseasons that resulted in Lakers losses.
Adding a traditional center to take some of that burden off Davis will keep the All-Star big man fresh throughout the regular season and deep into the postseason.
More depth at center is certainly needed for the Lakers. Christian Wood and Jaxson Hayes are not capable defensively and don't have the size and strength to match up with the best big men in the league. Someone who can do a somewhat reasonable job against Jokic, Joel Embiid, Domantas Sabonis, and Alperen Sengun for 15-20 minutes per game would do wonders for the Lakers.
The biggest problem with this strategy comes on the offensive end. Anthony Davis has become increasingly unwilling and inaccurate in shooting the ball. His mid-rangers and three-point shot have abandoned him after the high watermark of the 2020 championship run. If he is going to play power forward next to a traditional center, that will create massive spacing issues.
Davis is one of the best finishers and rim runners in the league. He needs to be around the basket at this stage of his career. Having a "big, bruising center" occupying the same spaces as Davis will make things difficult for the Lakers. So, either Davis has to rediscover his shooting form or Redick will have to get creative in trying to play two bigs in sub-optimal lineups.
