Chargers Get Big Justin Herbert Injury Update After Week 2 Scare
By Cem Yolbulan
The Los Angeles Chargers cruised to a dominant win against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, where they only allowed 159 yards and were never threatened. However, Bolts fans still left the game feeling uneasy due to the injury to their star quarterback Justin Herbert.
In the third quarter, Herbert was tackled from behind by linebacker DJ Johnson and hit face-first by defensive end Jayden Peevy, trapping his body between both players. He suffered a lower leg injury on the play and walked off to the medical tent on the sideline. He was able to finish the game but was seen limping afterward. He told reporters that he didn't know the severity of the injury and that X-rays would help determine it.
On Monday, he got the X-rays and according to The Athletic's Daniel Popper, they were negative.
NFL News: Chargers Avoid the Worst With Justin Herbert Injury
This is obviously a great sign for the Chargers but it's also important to remember that it doesn't mean Herbert is fully healthy and ready to go for Week 3. Even though he avoided the worst, there will be further evaluations "as the week goes on", according to head coach Jim Harbaugh. This could include an MRI.
Herbert might end up missing practice this week but it sounds like he will not be missing a significant amount of time.
The 26-year-old finished Sunday's outing with 14/20 for 130 yards and two touchdowns. The Chargers take on the Steelers on Sunday before facing the Chiefs for a crucial Week 4 matchup. Having their star quarterback healthy will give them an excellent chance to be 3-0 heading into that game.
