Chargers Cut Backup Quarterback After One Preseason Game
By Jovan Alford
The Los Angeles Chargers were not satisfied with their offensive performance in the preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks over the weekend and made a change in the quarterback room.
The Chargers announced on Monday that they’ve waived wide receiver Praise Olatoke and quarterback Casey Bauman.
Bauman joined the Chargers as an undrafted free agent from Division II Augustana in South Dakota after the 2024 NFL Draft and didn’t see a single snap in the team’s preseason game against the Seahawks.
Instead, the Chargers rolled with Easton Stick, Max Duggan, and Luis Perez. Among the three quarterbacks who played in the 16-3 loss, Perez had the best performance, completing 5-of-12 passes for 61 yards.
However, at the same time, Chargers fans were not happy with Stick, who didn’t prove to the fan base that he could be the team’s QB2 and potentially start if Justin Herbert isn’t ready for Week 1.
The veteran backup quarterback completed 5-of-13 passes for 31 yards and an interception. It was a putrid performance, which led to fans hoping Stick would be cut and the team find an upgrade at the QB2 spot.
With Bauman out of the picture, the race for the QB2 spot is down to Stick, Duggan, and Perez for the final two preseason games. Stick should still be considered the frontrunner despite his disappointing performance against the Seahawks.
Nevertheless, if Stick can’t get his act together this weekend against the Los Angeles Rams, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Chargers start to inquire about other QBs or give an extended look to Perez, who has played a lot of football in the spring circuit.
