Chargers Have Perfect Trade Opportunity After Surprise Cut
By Joe Summers
The Chargers have an unexpected, sudden perfect trade opportunity as the team tries to find a suitable backup QB for the 2024-25 campaign.
Justin Herbert's foot injury leaves uncertainty on the depth chart, and none of Los Angeles' signal callers aside from the star have impressed in the preseason. They cut former TCU standout Max Duggan and enter Saturday's preseason finale with UFL star Luis Perez and the underwhelming Easton Stick.
However, Browns QB Tyler Huntley represents an ideal trade target if Jim Harbaugh wants proper Herbert insurance.
Chargers Should Target Browns QB Tyler Huntley
Despite Harbaugh's insistence that Stick is the backup QB, Perez is obviously the superior candidate. Even still, neither QB inspires confidence given Herbert's injury could linger throughout the regular season.
Enter Huntley, who admittedly has struggled during his preseason appearances. The 2022 Pro Bowler has much more experience than either Stick or Perez though, and his time in Baltimore with Harbaugh's brother, John, should give the Chargers extra insight into the kind of backup he can be.
That's obviously not the best look for Huntley. Nonetheless, his passion and effort were exemplified by his chase-down tackle and those are two qualities that Harbaugh hopes to bring to Los Angeles. The Chargers have been an embarrassment for years, but high-motor plays are a symbol of a new era.
Perhaps Stick or Perez shines during the final preseason game and earns the backup spot. Based on their performance thus far, that's unlikely. Huntley could be had for minimal draft capital and the Chargers need to target him if they're serious about winning in Harbaugh's first year.
