Chargers Make A Surprising Decision on Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack
By Cem Yolbulan
The Los Angeles Chargers are entering a pivotal offseason. With a new general manager and head coach in charge of decision-making, there will likely be radical changes in the roster as well. Considering how underwhelming the Bolts were last season and how expensive of a roster they have, there will almost certainly be significant departures this offseason.
Two of the likeliest candidates to be gone are the two star defenders, Khalil Mack, and Joey Bosa. Not only are Mack and Bosa the two of the highest-profile players on the team, but they are also the highest-paid. Mack has a cap hit of $38.5 million for 2024 while Bosa costs the Chargers $36.6 million.
According to The Athletic's Diana Russini, the Chargers have made a decision on Bosa and Mack.
Chargers Put Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack on the Trade Block
Mack should have plenty of suitors in the trade market. In his age-32 season last year, Mack played every game and registered a whopping 17 sacks.
Bosa, on the other hand, struggled to stay healthy again. Over the last two seasons, he played a total of 14 games. Finding a team to take on his contract and injury risk will be a tall order.
That is why teams around the NFL are reportedly waiting to see if the Chargers would cut Bosa and Mack instead. Considering that Los Angeles is still over $21 million over the salary cap ahead of free agency, this is a real possibility, especially for Bosa.
Both players have the ability to be major contributors to a contender, but how much they will get back for either player, considering their salaries, remains to be seen.
The Chargers have some work to do this offseason if they want to go back to being a serious threat in the AFC. Currently, they lag behind the Chiefs in terms of odds (+370) in the AFC West to win the division.
