Chargers Make Last-Minute Roster Swap Before OTAs
By Jovan Alford
With rookie minicamp officially in the books, Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers will look towards OTAs as they prepare for the 2024 season.
However, before OTAs kick off, the Chargers have made one small change to the 90-man roster on Tuesday. Los Angeles announced they signed outside linebacker Chris Collins and waived outside linebacker Brevin Allen.
Allen joined the Chargers last year as an undrafted free agent out of Campbell University. The 23-year-old linebacker played two games after spending the majority of the 2023 season on the practice squad.
The 6-foot-3 linebacker was signed to a reserve/futures contract by the Chargers in January. As for Collins, he wrapped up his five-year collegiate career at the University of Minnesota and the University of North Carolina.
Last season at the University of Minnesota, Collins had 18 total tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery. Before he joined the Golden Gophers, Collins spent the first four years of his collegiate career with the Tar Heels.
Over his four-year stint with UNC, the outside linebacker produced 69 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks. Collins’ best season with the Tar Heels happened in 2021 when he had 29 total tackles, six tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks.
Collins has an uphill climb to make the Chargers’ 53-man roster as an EDGE rusher, but if he performs well in OTAs and preseason, the former Tarheel linebacker could steal a spot on the practice squad.
