Chargers Making Big Justin Herbert Mistake Ahead of Crucial Chiefs Matchup
By Cem Yolbulan
The Los Angeles Chargers suffered their first defeat of the season in Week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. More important than the loss, however, was star quarterback Justin Herbert leaving the game after re-aggravating his ankle injury.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh already received plenty of criticism for his decision to rush Herbert after he suffered a high ankle sprain against the Panthers in Week 2. Despite his limited participation in practice during the week, Herbert started again in Week 3 until getting re-injured on a sack in the third quarter.
Taylor Heinicke finished the game for the Bolts while LA failed to score another point the rest of the way and ended up losing the game, 20-10.
It seems like Harbaugh hasn't learned from his mistakes. Chargers insider Alex Insdorf reported on Wednesday that Herbert was trying to do everything he could to play in Week 4 against the Chiefs.

Because of the fact that the Chargers have a bye in Week 5, many had expected that Herbert would rest against Kansas City and have two weeks of rest before suiting up again. Considering that the former Oregon star already re-aggravated the sprain, this plan made a ton of sense.
However, Herbert explicitly said that is not the plan for now. While it is understandable that the Chargers want to stay within striking distance of the Chiefs in the AFC West standings, it is still Week 4. There is no need to risk your franchise quarterback for a regular-season game in September.
Even if Herbert suits up, the Chargers will be underdogs against the Chiefs. Yes, you want to build momentum with a huge win over your division rivals, but you also need to be smarter and keep the bigger picture in mind. Let's hope Harbaugh and Co. do that.
