Chargers Sign First-Round WR Before Week 4 Showdown vs. Chiefs
By Cem Yolbulan
The Los Angeles Chargers missed a big chance to go up 3-0 for the season when they dropped a winnable game against the Steelers over the weekend. Their bad weekend was only made worse with the news that Justin Herbert re-aggravated his ankle injury and star rookie Joe Alt suffered a serious injury. Ahead of a crucial AFC West matchup in Week 4, the Chargers are facing some depth concerns in a few key positions.
One position that has been a constant point of concern since the preseason is wide receiver. The Chargers have one of the least proven WR units in the league. Especially after Josh Palmer missed the Week 3 matchup, the Bolts had a very questionable receiver rotation of rookie Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, and Simi Fehoko. As a result, the Chargers are in the bottom five in terms of passing yards in the league through three weeks.
The front office finally addressed the need for depth at receiver with a surprise signing on Monday. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Chargers are signing former first-round pick Jalen Reagor.
NFL News: Chargers Sign WR Jalen Reagor
Reagor was released by the New England Patriots last week after he posted a contentious social media message about his role on the team. He had previously missed the cut for the 53-man roster and was on the practice squad to start the season. He appeared in 11 games in New England in 2023, putting up seven catches in 23 targets for 138 yards and no touchdowns. He had one touchdown on a kick return and has been effective as a return specialist on previous teams.
The former TCU star has yet to fulfill the promise he has shown before the 2020 NFL Draft that made him the No. 21 overall pick. He struggled to find his footing with the Eagles and was traded to the Vikings after two years in Philadelphia.
Reagor is still only 25 years old and will have an opportunity to revive his career in Los Angeles. He will certainly get a chance to be elevated out of the practice squad and has a path to offensive snaps in this Chargers receiver rotation.
